Oncology Unit

The recently opened oncology unit at the Wits University Donald Gordon Medical Centre offers state of the art facilities for patients requiring inpatient care related to the treatment of their cancers. The unit comprises 20 general oncology beds, offering patients private or semi-private facilities and 4 HEPA filtered, positive pressure transplant cubicles – each with their own private bathroom facilities, flat screen TV’s for the lengthy stays that patients receiving treatment for acute leukaemia or undergoing stem cell transplants require.

Transplant Unit

  • Office hours: Monday to Friday 08:00 – 16:00.
  • The Unit is not open on Weekends or Public Holidays.
  • Direct Telephone Number: (011) 356 – 6488
  • There is always a Co-ordinator on call and can be traced via our main switch board.
  • For after hours medication issues the patient should contact the matron or recipient co-ordinator.
  • In hospital information could be directed to Section E (Transplant Unit) in the hospital at (011) 356 – 6136/19

Transplant Network Group

All transplant patients and persons waiting for a transplant can join the group. The group meets every 3rd Saturday of the month.

Paediatric Oncology Unit

  • The Peads Oncology unit is a comprehensive unit taking care of all aspects of a child’s healing process
  • Booked Paediatric day cases are done in the day clinic
  • Pre-admission visitations by parents are welcomed to explain the admission process of day cases and normal admission.
  • No soft toys or fresh flowers are allowed in the unit
  • Children under the age of 12 yrs are not allowed to visit patients in isolation or on chemotherapy
  • Daily Paediatric Oncology Out Patient Department available for consultation with the Unit Oncologist

The Cancer Support Group meets every 2nd Saturday of the month.
