Research at WDGMC

and the University of the Witwatersrand

WDGMC welcomes researchers from within the hospital, Wits University and further afield. If you would like to conduct research at WDGMC, please be aware that you will be required to adhere to the following processes and obtain a number of ethical and regulatory permissions.

  1. Before research may take place at WDGMC, you need to make an application to the Wits Human Research Ethics Committee (Medical) [HREC(M)]. Please see the application form and relevant information here: http://www.wits.ac.za/ethics/human-research-ethics-committee-medical/. WDGMC will only accept research proposals that have been approved by the Wits HREC(M). If you have ethics clearance from another Human Research Ethics Committee (whether in South Africa or abroad), you are still required to make an application to the Wits HREC(M).
  2. In order for the HREC(M) to evaluate your application, you will need a letter of permission from WDGMC CEO Dr Sue Tager. If your research is deemed appropriate for WDGMC, this letter will be issued with a condition stipulating that no research or data collection may take place at WDGMC until you have a Clearance Certificate from the Wits HREC(M). To avoid confusion, an example of the HREC(M) clearance certificate is below.

If you would like to work with us, please email your protocol to wdgmcresearch@mediclinic.co.za.
