The Medical Centre

Wits Donald Gordon Medical Centre (WDGMC) is the first private academic hospital in South Africa. It was established in 2002 when the University of the Witwatersrand bought the Kenridge Hospital in Parktown with a founding donation from the Donald Gordon Foundation. The institution was then renamed the Wits University Donald Gordon Medical Centre. In 2005 Medi-Clinic Private Hospital Group became a partner with Wits University and was also awarded the management contract.

The hospital was established to create a facility in the private sector for the training of specialists and sub-specialists. All training programmes are fully integrated and complementary to the existing training programmes within the Wits Faculty of health Sciences.

Due to the relationship with Wits University's Faculty of Health Sciences patients have access to specialists who have been recruited because they are leaders in their field of expertise and involved in cutting edge research and patient care in South Africa and internationally. This 190 bed facility's main specialties are transplant surgery, oncology (both Paediatric and adult), surgical gastroenterology, ophthalmology, ear- nose and throat, urology, nephrology and Orthopaedics. It is known for its excellent 24 hour doctor manned Intensive Care Unit. Inpatient programmes are supported by a wide range of outpatient-based specialities, such as rheumatology, endocrinology, medical genetics, psychiatry and haematology.
